US army says airstrike kills 2 al-Shabab fighters in southern Somalia

Mogadishu: The US army said on Wednesday that it has killed two fighters from the Islamic group al-Shabab in an airstrike on Tuesday in southern Somalia.

The US Africa Command (AFRICOM), which oversees American troops on the African continent, said in a statement that the strike occurred around Huley in Lower Shabelle Region.

AFRICOM said no civilians were injured or killed in the strike which it said is one element of a larger strategy to support the Somali National Army as it increases pressure on the terrorist network and its recruiting efforts in the region.

The US military has stepped up its military support for Somalia over the past years. Some strikes have inflicted considerable casualties on al-Shabab in the last two months. (UNI)
