1993 massacre: Sopore remains shut, special prayers held for slain at mosques

 

Srinagar: The apple township of north Kashmir’s Sopore observed a complete shutdown to remember the 57 civilians who were shot by the government forces on January 6, 1993.

The locals said that scores of residents offered congregational prayers for the slain at various masjids and grave yards in the town.

Besides, members of the civil society and traders also offered the prayers for the dead.

All shops and other business establishments remained closed in the town while thin traffic movement was witnessed on the roads.

The human rights groups say that 57 people were shot dead in cold blood by the troopers of 94 BN Border Security Force (BSF) on this day.

The massacre was followed by arson and loot of shops and other business establishments.

According to the human rights groups, the troops set fire to over 400 shops and 75 residential houses from main chowk to tehsil office Sopore.

The incident happened after BSF man was killed by unidentified militants at Sopore’s main market following which the troopers went berserk and opened indiscriminate fire on civilians.
