J&K bags 8 medals in Jeet Kune Do national; 5 selected for Asian Martial Arts games

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir has bagged eight medals, including two gold and five silver, in Jeet Kune Do Martial Arts National championship held at Manipur.

Meanwhile, five medalists have been selected to represent the country in the Asian Martial Arts games to be held at Bangkok in Thailand from January 10, 2019, Rameez Khan, General Secretary of J&K Jeet Kune Do Association, who accompanied the team to Imphal, said.

However, appealing for support from the government, the selected players said that the administration should take initiative on their sponsorships to participate in the Asian championship.

The Jeet Kune Do Martial Arts National Championship, in which 12 states participated, was held at Khuman Lampak Indoor Stadium, Imphal in Manipur from December 14 to December 16, 2018.

The players who have won gold medals in the national event included Mohammad Sabir Najar and Nisar Ali Khan while Malik Wasil, Rasik Manzoor, Maroof Altaf, Iqbal Nazir and Zubair Bashir bagged silver medals. Meanwhile, Adil Maqbool secured bronze medal.

“The National Championship of Jeet Kune Do was held at Khuman Lampak Indoor Stadium, Imphal from December 14 to December 16. The competition was very tough, but our players performed extraordinarily in the national event and bagged eight medals, including two gold, five silver and a bronze medals,” Mr Khan said.

He said, “Five of our players were selected for Asian Martial Arts Games during selection trials at Manipur. Hopefully we will get support from the government so that the selected players get a chance to participate in the international event.”

Meanwhile, expressing happiness over the performance of the players from J&K in the national event, Jeet Kune Do Martial Arts Federation, General Secretary, Sifu Lion Vikas Gihara, said the players from the state have a good chance of winning medals in the upcoming Asian Martial Arts Championship, which will be held in Thailand. “I have seen players from J&K perform in the national event and I’m sure selected martial artists will bag medals in the Asian event,” he said.

He said six martial arts forms, including Jeet Kune Do, Taekwondo and Karata, will be played in the Asian Martial Arts Games held in Thailand.
