Geneva:The United Nations said that about one million Syrian children were born in the neighboring countries they had sought refuge in since the beginning of the humanitarian crisis in Syria, increasing the requirements of its various agencies to address the humanitarian plight of Syrian refugees and their children.

United Nations agencies and partner Non-governmental organizations from Geneva have issued a regional plan to assist neighboring host countries, support Syrian refugees and enhance their adaptive capacities during 2019 and 2020.

UNHCR Director for the Middle East and North Africa Bureau and Regional Refugee Coordinator for Syria and Iraq Amin Awad said that there are now almost a million Syrian children born in previous years in neighboring countries.

UN official added that children of one to seven years need special attention, and that the international community must draw its attention to this figure and to the needs of UNHCR, UN and the humanitarian community with its voluntary organizations in order to play their role in a positive way to cover the needs of refugees in general, and the needs of a million children born in the previous seven years.

Estimates of international human rights and rights organizations say more than 13 million Syrians have been displaced since the conflict erupted seven years ago, accounting for about 60 percent of the population before the war. More than five million Syrian refugees live in a number of neighboring countries, notably Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan.
