Srinagar: The historic 86-km-long Mughal road remained closed for the third day on Wednesday due to snowfall and slippery road condition while one-way traffic was plying despite rain on the national highway, connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country.

The Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region, remained closed due to accumulation of snow, particularly at Pir-ki-Gali, a traffic police official told UNI. He said the road has also become very slippery as the snow had accumulated due to below freeing temperature.

Though district administration from both sides have already pressed into service snow clearance machines to put through the road, intermittent snowfall hampered the operation, he said, adding that there is also forecast for more snow and avalanches.

Large number of vehicles, including trucks and oil tankers, are stranded on both sides of the Gali, official sources said, adding that last month, over 200 passengers and truckers were rescued after they got struck on the road due to snowfall.

Despite rain, one-way traffic was allowed on the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, the only all weather road linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, traffic police official said.

Hundreds of vehicles, including trucks loaded with essentials, left Jammu for Kashmir, he said, adding that no vehicle will be allowed from opposite direction.
