AMU suspends 3 Kashmiri students for offering absentia prayers to slain Mannan Wani

Srinagar: The Aligarh Muslim University on Thursday suspended three Kashmiri students, who tried offered ‘Janaze ki Namaz’ following the death of former research scholar-turned Hizbul Mujahideen commander, Mannan Wani, in a joint operation of government forces including Jammu and Kashmir police in northern Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

A media report said that they confirmed the suspension of three students from proctor of the university Mohsin Khan.

“The three Kashmiri students were suspended as they violated the university’s discipline and rules and indulged in unlawful assembly. Four other students who supported the namaz will be issued a show cause notice. The students and their academic details are being identified. Anti-national activities will not be tolerated in the university campus,” the report quoted the proctor as saying.

Around 15 Kashmiri students gathered at Kennedy Hall allegedly for performing the namaz, which is offered in memory of the dead, after Wani’s death was reported. Wani was pursuing a doctorate in geology at AMU when he joined the militant outfit earlier this year.

Former president of AMU Students’ Union Faizul Hassan also arrived at the spot and requested the students not to perform the namaz for Wani. “I opposed their decision. I told them if they want to do this, they should go to Kashmir as such activities defame the university,” said Hassan.
