Militant killed, civilian injured in south Kashmir

Srinagar, Aug 24: A militant was killed while a civilian was injured in an encounter in south Kashmir district of
Anantnag during a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) on Friday morning, official sources said.
Director General of Police (DGP) S P Vaid in a tweet said, ”Encounter was going on in Kokernag area of Anantnag, reportedly presence of 2/3 terrorists, firing stopped, search is on.”
Internet service of all cellular companies has been suspended in Anantnag district to prevent spread of rumours. However, train service in the valley also remained suspended for the third day today as a precautionary measure.
A police spokesman said on a tip-off about the presence of militants, troops of Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched joint searches in forest area in village Gadole at Kokernag in Anantnag district early this morning.
When the troops were moving towards particular area, the militants hiding there opened fire with automatic weapons.

Forces also retaliated ensuing in an encounter, they said, adding a militant was killed.
Sources said forces blasted the house from where the militants were hiding and firing.
They said additional forces were rushed to the area to foil any attempt by the militants to escape.
Later the police stated the stated the slain militant belonged to Pakistan and was affiliated with Jaish-e-Mohammad outfit.
During the encounter, a civilian was also injured who was removed to the hospital. 

This was the first encounter in south Kashmir after militants shot dead three policemen, including an officer and a BJP local leader since Eid-ul-Azha on August 22. (UNI)
