Srinagar: The historic Jamia Masjid in the down town Srinagar, remained closed for the third day on Sunday as a precautionary measure to prevent any protests, when Joint Resistance Leadership have called for a general strike on second death anniversary of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) commander Burhan Wani who was killed in an encounter by security forces on this day in Anantnag in 2016.

The JRL had called for a strike on Saturday against shifting of Dukhtaran-e-Milat (DeM) chief Asiya Andrabi and her two associates to New Delhi on Friday by National Investigation Agency (NIA) in connection with alleged anti national activities.

No Friday prayers could be offered in the Masjid, stronghold of moderate Hurriyat Conference (HC) chairman Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq, who has been put under house arrest since early Friday morning.

All gates of the historic worship place remained closed and large number of security forces and state police personnel remained deployed in the main Jamia market and adjoining areas to prevent people from entering there.

No prayers could be offered in the masjid since Friday due to restrictons, the locals alleged.

Meanwhile, all roads leading to Jamia masjid, including at Rajouri Kadal, Rangar Stop and Gojwara have been closed with barbed wire. However, vehicles, carrying patients and medical staff were being allowed towards S K Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) after checking their documents.
