Attention: Floods declared in Central Kashmir

Srinagar: Authorities on Saturday declared floods in Srinagar and other districts of central Kashmir after water level in Jhelum crossed the danger mark of 18-ft.

Similar declaration was made in south Kashmir yesterday evening after the water level in Jhelum crossed 21 ft at Sangam.

However, water level has started to recede at Sangam as the rainfall has stopped in southern Kashmir.

Media reports quoting Chief Engineer Irrigation and Flood Control Department Kashmir Er M M Shahnawaz said the gauge at Ram Munshibagh has crossed the flood declaration level of 18 ft i.e 19 ft at 12 am.

“The habitation residing along the embankments of River Jhelum / Nallahs and in low lying areas of central Kashmir are advised to remain vigilant,” he said.

Besides the staff deputed on flood duty in Central Kashmir is directed to report to their respective sectors/beats, he added.

The river Jhelum was flowing at 20.77-ft at Ram Munshibagh at 8 am, the official said.

At Sangam, the level was 23.29 ft at 8 am.
