Shopian shuts down on Asiya-Neelofar death anniversary

A complete shutdown is being observed in district Shopian  of south Kashmir  on the death anniversaries of   rape and Murder (Asiya and Neelofar) who were allegedly raped by Government forces  on 29 May 2009

All business establishments, shops and schools are closed in town while as tiny traffic is plying on roads. Earlier a shutdown call was given by joint resistance leadership to observe a complete shutdown in district Shopian.

On May 29, 2009, Sister in laws Asiya, (17) and Neelofar (22) had gone to their  orchard across the ankle deep Ranbi Ara stream in  however they  did not return home.

On the next day the dead bodies of the sisters-in-law were recovered from the banks of the stream.

The family and locals alleged the duo had been raped and murdered by the government forces. The incident triggered widespread protests across Kashmir valley while as the Shopian town observed shutdown for straight 47 days.

Later CBI was called to probe the death of Asiya and Neelofar which declared that the young ladies had died due to drowning in the  Ranbi Ar stream .

There was nobody to believe the CBI declaration with the  “Shopian Coordination Committee”  terming the  CBI probe  “hush up”
