Restrictions imposed in parts of Srinagar, tough security arrangements to stop protests

The government Tuesday imposed unannounced restritrictions in parts of the summer capital Srinagar while as life came to a halt across Kashmir to protest the killing of a civilian in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

The restrictions were imposed in old city areas of Rainawari, Khanyar, Nowhatta, M.R.Gunj and Safa Kadal. Partial restrictions also remained in force in uptown areas of Maisuma and Kralkhud.

The police and paramilitary personnel, wearing riot gears, were deployed in the area since early morning to prevent people from staging pro-freedom demonstrations.

Shops, business establishments, public transport remained closed in the valley.

Train services between north Kashmir’s Baramulla town and Bannihal town in the Jammu region were cancelled.

Mobile Internet services have been suspended across south Kashmir.

The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), has called for the shutdown in view of the killing of a civilian buy goverenment forces in Drobgam village located in South kashmir’s Pulwama district.

In a firece gunfight on Monday, a top commander of Hizbul Mujahideen, Sameer Tiger and his associate Aquib Khan, were killed during a gun battle with the army and the police. Several troopers including an army major also sustained crticial injuries during the encounter.

During the encounter, the youth including thise of nearby villages rushed towards the encounter site to save the trapped militants. The goverenment used ammunition including pellets, bullet rounds and tear gas canisters to disperse the youth who were also raising slogans in favour of freedom.

During the protests the forces shot dead a civilian, Shahid Ahmad.
